Troubleshooting Torticollis: A Guide for Treating Your Baby's Torticollis
10-Page Torticollis Stretches & Exercises Guide with Pictures, Videos, & Instructions
This guide, created by expert pediatric physical therapists, will help you identify and treat your baby’s early signs of torticollis or preference to tilt or turn their head in one direction.

What is Torticollis?
Infant torticollis is a condition where a baby’s neck muscle tightens, causing discomfort and limited mobility on one side. This can occur due to positioning during pregnancy, birth, or a congenital muscle imbalance. These symptoms can be treated with torticollis stretches and exercises.
Other findings associated with torticollis include facial asymmetries, difficulty breastfeeding on one side, decreased tolerance to being held on one side vs. the other, and flattening on one side of the head.
As pediatric physical therapists, we have vast experiencing prescribing torticollis stretches and exercises to help treat symptoms of torticollis and provide relief.
Why are Torticollis Stretches & Exercises Important?
Treating infant torticollis is important because it can lead to further complications like plagiocephaly (a flat head shape) and difficulty with developmental milestones like crawling and sitting.
Torticollis treatment is 3-pronged, focusing on positioning, passive mobility, and active mobility & strength. All areas of treatment are important to ensure head/neck asymmetries do not lead to other bodily asymmetries as the child develops. Bodily asymmetries can lead to future gross motor skill delay.
